Dear Panther Family,

As we close the semester and reflect on this past weekend’s commencement, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for what has truly been a remarkable year on our campus.
This has been a phenomenal year—one defined by hard work, resilience, care for one another, and a shared commitment to our students. Every day, in ways both seen and unseen, you have contributed to the strength and spirit of this community. For that, I am profoundly grateful.

Commencement on Saturday was a beautiful and meaningful celebration. Our graduates crossed the stage surrounded by pride, love, and the unmistakable sense of accomplishment that each of you helped make possible. I hope you had the opportunity to reflect on the words of our keynote speaker, Dr. Belle Wheelan. Her message was powerful, timely, and a fitting tribute to the journey of our College and the Class of 2026.

To our students: what a year you have had. To those beginning a new adventure beyond Ģý—whether heading to graduate school, launching careers, or pursuing new callings—please know how proud we are of you. You carry with you the very best of this place.

And to those students who will be returning, I cannot wait to welcome you back home in the fall. Thank you for the energy, spirit, and commitment you bring to this campus each and every day. You have achieved excellence not only in the classroom, but also on the field, marking an outstanding inaugural year in Division II competition. Dear Panther Family,

As we move through the spring semester towards commencement, I am filled with gratitude for the resilience, dedication, and heart demonstrated across our campus. March has been a month of meaningful progress—academically, athletically, spiritually, and operationally. The strength of this community continues to shine through in the care we show one another and in our unwavering commitment to our students. For that, I am most grateful.

This month, we were honored to welcome the Commonwealth’s Secretary of Agriculture, The Honorable Katie Frazier, who spoke at the Agripalooza event. My sincere gratitude to Dr. Dane Fausnacht, Ms. Hailey Turner, and all who worked so thoughtfully to bring this meaningful event to Ģý. It was a powerful reflection of our commitment to agriculture, community, and experiential learning.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Emily Blankenship-Tucker, Rebecca Crocker, and Rachel Blankenship-Tucker for their outstanding leadership of The Music Man. I also sincerely thank all of the performers and everyone who contributed to making this production so memorable for our campus and community. Over four days of performances, they brought our campus and community together, with several shows nearly or completely sold out—showcasing the remarkable talent and spirit of Ģý.

I am equally proud to share that our May Commencement speaker will be Dr. Belle Wheelan, who served as President of SACSCOC for over 20 years and brings deep ties to the Commonwealth through her leadership as President Emerita of Northern Virginia Community College and as Secretary of Education under then-Governor Mark Warner. We are truly honored and excited to welcome her home to Ģý.

In an effort to streamline this update, I am pleased to share the following highlights in bullet format, reflecting key accomplishments and updates as provided by the members of our Senior Leadership Team. Academic Affairs

Faculty continue to distinguish themselves through scholarship, innovation, and engagement:

Dear Panther Family,

As we move toward the close of February, I want to pause—not simply to report numbers, but to thank and acknowledge people. Every gain we are experiencing is the result of faithful, steady work across this campus. Faculty who mentor beyond the classroom. Coaches who shape character. Staff who solve problems quietly and consistently. Alumni and donors who believe in our mission.

Our results are showing great promise. Yet promise requires discipline. As we celebrate progress, we must remain vigilant, seeking cost-saving opportunities, bringing more students to campus, and doing all we can to retain those entrusted to us. That reality calls us not to anxiety, but to focus and unity.

#FerrumRising requires both gratitude and grit.

A New Chaplain: A Ministry of Presence and Purpose

As shared in my recent email to the campus community, Pastor Dave Taylor has been appointed as Chaplain of Ģý. We are grateful for his continued leadership and presence within our community and look forward to the meaningful impact he will have on the spiritual life of our campus.

Staff Council: A New Beginning

During February, the Staff Council launched its inaugural staff-wide membership meeting, drawing more than 48 attendees. The meeting, designed to enhance communication between staff and the Senior Leadership Team, featured introductions by each member of the Staff Executive Board (Eboard), participation from SLT members and setting a recurring schedule at 11:30 a.m. on the third Monday of each month via Zoom. The EBoard is represented by Justin Muse as Chair, Corretta Patterson as Vice Chair, JB Von Preysing as Secretary, and Sam Martin as Treasurer & Community Engagement Representative.

Academic Affairs: Igniting Minds, Empowering Leaders, Advancing Knowledge

Academic excellence is the cornerstone of our identity. When families choose Ģý, they are entrusting us with intellectual formation, career preparation, and personal transformation. That sacred responsibility requires us to examine our programs honestly, strengthen what works, and refine what needs improvement.

At the same time, our retention efforts reflect a proactive, student-centered approach. We are not waiting for students to struggle silently; we are intervening early and intentionally.

Retention initiatives include the following:

  • 3-, 6-, and 9-week progress checkpoints
  • Rapid-response protocols for at-risk students
  • Proactive removal of registration holds
  • Expansion of success coaching (a third coach hired)
  • Strengthened deposit-to-first-day coordination
  • DFW grades: course analysis for targeted intervention

These strategies matter. Retention is not just a metric; it is a reflection of belonging, support, and institutional commitment. As we continue this work, we must remain attentive to operational efficiencies and cost stewardship while ensuring that we provide an exceptional academic experience.

The Blue Ridge Institute and Museum is temporarily closed for audit and reorganization, and planning is underway to revitalize the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival with long-term sustainability in mind. We are honoring our heritage while strengthening our foundation.

Athletics: Momentum in Our Division II Journey—Competing, Growing, Excelling

Athletics at Ģý is about more than wins and losses. It is about discipline, teamwork, leadership, and representing our institution with integrity. Our transition to NCAA Division II is a defining chapter in our history, and one we are navigating with preparation and purpose.

We successfully hosted our NCAA Provisional Year #1 membership site visit on February 12-13. This milestone required coordination across multiple offices and demonstrates that Ģý is capable of meeting and exceeding rigorous standards.

Athletic highlights include the following:

  • Hosted a successful Basketball Alumni Event on January 17.
  • Baseball earned its first D2 victory on February 8 against Concord University.
  • Men’s Basketball currently #3 in Conference Carolinas KPI standings.
  • Women’s Basketball currently #11 in Conference Carolinas KPI standings.
  • Both programs remain on track for postseason representation.
  • Development programs for men’s and women’s basketball concluded successfully.
  • Continued production of The 40 West Show athletic video podcast series.
  • Hired Assistant Cross Country and Track Coach Benjamin Gribbins.

These accomplishments reflect strong leadership and disciplined execution.

Student-Athlete Achievements

Our student-athletes continue to excel in competition and in the classroom. Their accomplishments represent early mornings, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.

  • Winter honors include:
  • Jahmal Jones winning the 60-meter dash at both the Liberty Open and VMI Winter Relays
  • Robert Owens Jr. named Men’s Wrestler of the Week
  • Gerren Jones named Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
  • Zenallah Hatcher-Simmons recognized as Women’s Indoor Track Field Athlete of the Week

Fall achievements included 35 Academic All-Conference honorees and numerous conference recognitions across football and soccer. Our Women’s Flag Football team captured the NCFFL Fall Classic title in Washington, D.C., with Kali Jacobs named Classic MVP.

We celebrate these wins, and we also recognize that competitive success must be paired with financial responsibility and enrollment growth to sustain long-term momentum. Everyone’s support makes a difference to these student athletes. THANK YOU!

Sustained excellence depends on disciplined recruiting and strong retention. Our 2026 athletic enrollment target remains 200 new student-athletes.

Retention remains strong:

These are encouraging indicators. Yet the broader institutional goal remains clear: we must continue bringing students to campus—across all programs—and retaining those already here. Every campus visit, every advising conversation, every positive student experience matters. Compliance: Integrity in Action—Ensuring Excellence and Accountability

At Ģý, our long-term success is rooted in integrity, accountability, and a commitment to doing what is right—even when it happens behind the scenes. Compliance work is not always visible, but it is essential to sustaining our credibility, protecting our students, and ensuring that our institution thrives now and for generations to come.

Key progress includes the following:

  • Financial Aid compliance scheduling
  • VA supervisory audit preparation
  • International student process transitions
  • Registrar operational realignment
  • Ongoing coordination with SCHEV and federal consultants

The Office of the Registrar has relocated to Spilman-Daniel House and now reports directly to Dr. Angela Payne, with a dotted-line relationship to Dr. Karl Hatton. This move strengthens student-centered operations and creates a true one-stop shop for students, as Ģý, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and the Registrar are now all housed under one roof.

Through these efforts, we are ensuring that Ģý operates with excellence, transparency, and trust. By staying vigilant, aligning processes, and prioritizing our students’ experience, we reinforce the foundation on which every aspect of our mission—academic, spiritual, and co-curricular —rests. Our commitment to integrity is what allows Ģý to rise stronger each day.

Finance & Institutional Strength: Stewardship for a Stronger Future

At Ģý, financial discipline is more than numbers on a ledger; it is the engine that powers our mission, fuels opportunity, and sustains the excellence our students deserve. Every decision we make, every dollar we steward, directly impacts our ability to grow, innovate, and provide life-changing experiences.

I am deeply grateful to our finance team for their steadfast oversight, ensuring that we remain accountable and strategic in every aspect of our operations.

As of December 31, 2025:

  • 58% of budgeted revenues received; 48% of budgeted expenses incurred
  • Endowment at $65 million (up from $62.9 million last year)
  • Audit ongoing with no issues reported

Improved spring enrollment has generated additional net tuition and room and board revenue, projected to reduce the operating deficit by approximately 10% compared to the revised budget.

While these trends are promising, promise is not the same as completion. We must remain vigilant, continuously seeking cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies. Balanced budgets require disciplined enrollment growth and retention.

This goal is within our reach, but it will require collective ownership, focus, and execution across every team and every touchpoint with our students. By working together with intention and accountability, we ensure not only financial stability but the continued strength and sustainability of Ģý for years to come.

Enrollment Management: Opening Doors, Building Futures, Growing Ģý

Enrollment is the lifeblood of Ģý. It is the engine that fuels every program, every classroom, and every student opportunity. I am deeply grateful for the tireless energy, strategic focus, and collaborative spirit within the Enrollment Management team, as well as the unwavering support it receives from every corner of our campus community. Together, we are building pathways for students to thrive, grow, and succeed—and every interaction, every touchpoint, and every effort contributes to the momentum we are creating.

Expanded high-touch outreach, enhanced campus visit experiences, strengthened transfer recruitment strategies, and the implementation of real-time enrollment dashboards are not simply tactical adjustments; they represent a cultural commitment to intentional growth. Every prospective student interaction is being approached with greater personalization, urgency, and care. From the first inquiry to move-in day, we are working to ensure that students and families experience Ģý as attentive, responsive, and deeply invested in their success.

At the same time, we remain clear-eyed about the work ahead. While our results are encouraging, we must continue pressing forward with discipline and focus. At this point, achieving a balanced budget requires enrolling a minimum of 401 additional new students and reaching a minimum of 510 returning students to position us for long-term financial strength. That reality calls us to be vigilant—seeking cost-saving opportunities where possible, maximizing every recruitment opportunity, and redoubling our efforts to retain the students who have already entrusted us with their education.

Enrollment is not the work of one office. It is the work of an entire campus community. Every classroom interaction, every email response, every campus tour, every advising conversation shapes a student’s decision to enroll and to remain. Hospitality matters. Responsiveness matters. The daily lived experience we create for students matters. Recruitment and retention are shared responsibilities that benefit our College and everyone, and together, through consistent and collective effort, we will continue building the momentum that is already taking root.

Institutional Advancement: Fueling Ģý’s Future Through Generosity, Vision, and Impact

Philanthropy is more than generosity; it is confidence in who we are and conviction about where we are going. Every gift represents a vote of trust in our students, an affirmation of our mission, and a tangible investment in Ģý’s future. In a season that demands both resilience and vision, our alumni and friends have responded with extraordinary belief in this institution.

Giving momentum continues to build:

  • Total Giving: $1.6M (23% increase)
  • 2,656 unique donors: 77% increase
  • Ferrum Fund: $195,556
  • Endowment Giving: $345,249 (184% increase year-over-year)
  • 10 grant applications submitted

These numbers tell a powerful story. They reflect a growing community that understands the value of a Ģý education and is willing to stand behind it. Increased endowment support strengthens long-term sustainability. Annual fund participation enhances immediate student experiences. Grant activity expands innovation and opportunity.

We do not take this trust lightly. Each dollar entrusted to Ģý expands scholarships, enriches programming, supports faculty excellence, and reinforces institutional stability. Most importantly, it opens doors for students whose lives will be changed because someone believed in them.

As we continue our work, remaining vigilant in stewarding resources wisely and focused on strategic growth, we move forward strengthened by the generosity of those who care deeply about Ģý’s future. Their belief fuels our momentum, and together, we are building a legacy that will endure for generations.

Operations: Execution, Resilience, and Readiness

Operational excellence is the quiet force that sustains every visible success on our campus. From residence halls to payroll systems, from safety infrastructure to student engagement, the work of our operations teams ensures that Ģý functions efficiently, safely, and responsively, even under challenging circumstances. The early winter months tested our systems with facility repairs, severe weather events, and year-end reporting requirements. Yet through disciplined execution and cross-departmental coordination, our teams maintained continuity of operations, supported students who remained on campus, and resolved multiple infrastructure challenges with urgency and professionalism. As enrollment grows and summer programming expands, the Operations Leadership Team remains focused on strengthening efficiencies, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring that our campus is fully prepared to support both current and future students.

Campus Police

Campus Police maintained continuous coverage throughout winter break and the severe January-February weather events, ensuring uninterrupted safety operations during remote campus conditions. The department is actively pursuing grant funding for expanded exterior entrance camera coverage and implementation of an additional card-access door system to strengthen campus security infrastructure. In partnership with Franklin County Public Safety, three officers are being scheduled for certification to teach First Aid/CPR to the campus community, expanding in-house emergency response capacity. Chief Kelley and K-9 Erika also assisted the Town of Rocky Mount Police with a firearm search on January 29, reinforcing Ģý’s role as a regional public safety partner.

Human Resources

Human Resources completed year-end tax processing ahead of prior-year timelines and successfully onboarded new employees in January and February. The department launched its inaugural employee wellness and professional development series in December, establishing monthly sessions focused on stress management, resilience, financial wellness, and career growth. Implementation of the JazzHR applicant tracking system is underway, with supervisor training forthcoming to ensure a streamlined, transparent, and compliant hiring process. HR also partnered in hosting campus-wide engagement events, strengthening employee connection and institutional culture.

Physical Plant

Physical Plant completed substantial repairs to Moore Hall by the week of January 19, returning the residence hall to full occupancy before the end of the month. Following the January 24-25 winter storm, crews cleared snow and ice campus-wide and addressed multiple infrastructure challenges, including water pipe leaks due to extended freezing temperatures, a main water valve failure in Chapman Hall, backflow repairs impacting Roberts and Moore, an additional localized flood in Moore, and a water main break near the 602 apartments. Each issue was resolved in a timely manner, minimizing disruption to campus life. The department is also evaluating improvements to its inventory system and exploring expanded skills-training opportunities for staff to increase operational efficiency.

Student Affairs

Student Affairs supported both new and returning student check-in in January while also serving as essential personnel during major winter weather events, assisting with student support and building walkthroughs to identify leaks and structural concerns. Since the beginning of the fall semester, 174 student events and activities have been offered, with continued growth in club participation, intramurals, and fitness center utilization. The CARE Team meets weekly and includes cross-campus representatives to review student support referrals submitted through the campus reporting system. Additionally, the College was awarded $11,900 in SCHEV grant funding to enhance food pantry resources, and wellness programming continues to expand through activities hosted in the Wellness Center.

Together, these operational areas ensure that Ģý functions not only efficiently, but with heart. Their collective work sustains the daily rhythm of campus life and positions us to move forward with stability, care, and shared purpose.

Looking Ahead: Planning Today, Thriving Tomorrow

As we approach spring break, I encourage each of you to pause and renew. Growth requires effort, and effort requires rest. Our faculty and staff continue to give generously of their time and talent, and our students continue to rise to the challenge.

To those competing during the break, we wish you continued success and safe travels. You represent Ģý with pride and we are both grateful for your sacrifice and proud of your hard work and achievements.

A Note of Gratitude

As we begin 2026, I wish to sincerely thank each member of our campus community for your unwavering commitment, flexibility, and dedication. Despite adverse weather conditions, you have continued to pivot seamlessly, support one another, and provide our students with the excellent academic and personal care that defines Ģý. Your collective efforts ensure that our students feel supported, engaged, and inspired, even during challenging circumstances. It is your teamwork, resilience, and heart for our students that make our community thrive.

Ģý is at a pivotal moment in its institutional recovery and growth. Across culture, enrollment, finances, fundraising, student success, alumni engagement, and accreditation, the College is demonstrating measurable momentum while remaining candid about the work ahead. The initiatives summarized below reflect a coordinated, data-informed strategy designed to stabilize the institution, strengthen the student experience, and position Ģý for long-term sustainability.

Campus Culture and Institutional Climate

To advance the goal of improving campus culture, during the fall of 2025, Ģý engaged AccessU to conduct a comprehensive, externally administered climate survey of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The survey is carefully designed to ensure clarity, relevance, and anonymity, encouraging honest feedback. The survey invitation and link were sent earlier this week. This is legitimate and authorized by the Board of Trustees.  We encourage you to take a minute to complete the survey.

Financial Stewardship and Budget Stability

The College’s financial position continues to improve. As of December 31, approximately 56% of budgeted revenues had been realized, while only 47% of expenses had been incurred, representing an encouraging reversal from the prior year. Budget development for FY26-27 will continue to follow a zero-based approach, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.

Retention remains central to financial stability: for every ten additional students retained, the institutional deficit is reduced by approximately 24%. Achieving a goal of 510 returning students and 401 new students for Fall 2026 is ambitious but attainable, given current trends and coordinated institutional effort.

Enrollment Growth and Leadership Stability

Enrollment Trends

  • Fall 2025: 899 students (872 FTE), up 17.7% over Fall 2024.
  • Spring 2026: 829 students (796 FTE), up 15.8% over Spring 2025.
  • Undergraduate fall-to-spring retention projected at 89.5%, up from 87% the prior year

Retention Performance

  • Fall-to-Spring 2024-2025: 86% degree-seeking, 84% overall
  • Fall-to-Spring 2025-2026: 87% degree-seeking, 86% overall
  • Fall-to-Fall FY24-FY25: 67% full-time, 66% overall, up from 64% in FY23–FY24

Nationally, fall-to-fall retention rates, particularly at small private institutions, typically trail fall-to-spring retention. According to the most recent National Student Clearinghouse Research Center report and to other national data sources (such as IPEDS trend tables), retention rates have remained in the mid-60% range in recent years, reflecting continued enrollment volatility and financial pressures on students and families.

Within that context, Ģý’s fall-to-fall retention increased to 67% for full-time students and 66% overall, up from 64% in the prior year. This improvement places the College at or slightly above national norms and signals positive year-over-year momentum.

Our strategic focus is to translate strong fall-to-spring persistence (86-87%) into higher fall-to-fall retention, by extending academic, financial, and engagement supports through the summer and into the following academic year. In short, our goal is to convert strong fall-to-spring persistence into sustained year-over-year retention.

Leadership Stabilization for Enrollment Management and Most Recent Enrollment Data

  • Dr. Karl Hatton appointed VP for Enrollment Management, bringing experience in enrollment growth and retention improvement.
  • Dr. Angela Payne transitions to Senior Adviser to the President for Compliance, ensuring continuity in regulatory oversight across Ģý, Financial Aid, Registrar, and related functions.

Ģý, Financial Aid, and Registrar operations have been realigned to improve coordination, accelerate decision-making, and enhance the student onboarding experience.

Ģý continues to see strong momentum in its recruitment efforts for Fall 2026. Early indicators reflect growth across all stages of the admissions funnel, demonstrating both increased interest from prospective students and improved conversion through the admit and deposit process. 

The data below highlight year-over-year gains, underscoring the effectiveness of our coordinated recruitment strategies and the growing appeal of a Ģý education.

Despite the positive momentum, I wish to remind everyone that recruitment and yielding a class are a journey, and until our incoming class is finalized in August 2026, our work is not done

Fundraising performance continues to exceed expectations.

The College is preparing for a $25-30M comprehensive fundraising initiative, prioritizing:

  1. Unrestricted giving and endowment growth
  2. Recruitment, retention, athletics, technology, and facilities
  3. Long-term engagement through alumni outreach and recurring giving programs

Student Success and Retention Strategy

Under the leadership of our interim provost, Dr. Richard Grant, Ģý is implementing a coordinated, best-practice-based retention strategy grounded in early intervention, academic support, financial stability, and institutional accountability.

Key Initiatives

  • Progress Reports: Weeks 3, 6, and 9 to identify at-risk students.
  • Care Team & Early Alert: Unified reporting mechanism to ensure coordinated interventions.
  • Clearance and Support for Returning Students: Timely identification and resolution of registration or financial barriers.
  • Incoming Students: Early orientation, onboarding, and cross-divisional coordination to reduce summer melt.

Strategic Retention Priorities

  5. Financial Stability & Basic Needs – micro-grants, emergency fund, financial literacy, basic needs hub.

Athletics

Alumni engagement continues to strengthen both fundraising and institutional visibility. In 2025, over 1,100 participants attended 40+ alumni and donor events. Strategic initiatives include the following:

Academic Quality and Accreditation

Ģý remains in good standing with SACSCOC and is on track for a successful Fifth-Year Review. Academic program review continues under the leadership of Dr. Jason Powell, who has transitioned into the role of AVP for Institutional Effectiveness and Institutional Research, ably supported by Jason Byrd. 

Accreditation is central to the College’s mission and future, and this realignment of skills, expertise, and on-site presence strengthens our ability to enhance data reporting, respond effectively to internal data needs, and ensure transparent, reliable information across the institution.

Program-specific accreditations in Nursing and Social Work have been reaffirmed, and workforce-aligned programs have been launched to meet local industry needs. Institutional Research supports ongoing program evaluation, strategic planning, and continuous improvement.

Forever Panthers

This past month, we lost two extraordinary members of the Ģý family whose lives embodied the very heart of this institution. Mr. Jud Mason was a devoted alumnus, a faithful member of the Board of Trustees, and a lifelong champion of Ģý who served this nation proudly as an officer in the Marine Corp. He loved this College deeply and gave of his time, wisdom, and resources with humility and quiet conviction. Mr. Mason believed profoundly in the mission of Ģý and in the promise of our students. His steady counsel, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to the College will be felt for generations to come.

We also mourn the passing of Pastor Michael Little, a man of deep faith, integrity, and compassion who served Ģý with a shepherd’s heart. As Chaplain, Pastor Little was present wherever students were—from athletic contests and campus celebrations to revivals, memorials, and moments of personal struggle—always offering encouragement, prayer, and a steady hand. He led with grace, listened with intention, and served with love, leaving an indelible imprint on the lives of our students and the wider Panther community. A memorial service will be held in Vaughn Chapel. Information will follow as it becomes available.

In different but equally powerful ways, both Mr. Mason and Pastor Little truly exemplified Not Self, But Others. Their lives of service, generosity, and faith stand as enduring models of what it means to be a Panther. They will forever remain a part of Ģý, Forever Panthers.

This has been a year of milestones—moments built through hard work, shared purpose, and unwavering belief in who we are and what we can accomplish together. This is what being a Panther is all about.

During this season of joy and thanksgiving, I am grateful for each of you—for your commitment, your resilience, and the impact you make every single day. The dedication and Panther spirit that fill this campus are the reasons Ģý continues to rise. We truly have so much to be thankful for.

Dear Panther Family,

What a wonderful and history-making Homecoming we’ve just experienced—our first as an NCAA Division II institution—followed by the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival, which brought thousands of visitors to campus and highlighted Ģý’s cultural and regional leadership. I am deeply grateful to our faculty, staff, and students whose hard work and dedication made these milestones possible, and to our alumni whose return filled Ferrum with energy, pride, and a profound sense of home. These celebrations reminded us all what it truly means to say Welcome Home!

Academic Affairs

October was marked by continued academic engagement and preparation for the close of the semester. Building on the success of the September 25 Majors Fair, students participated in Advising Week and Spring Registration, both of which benefited from the dedicated in-person support provided by our Advising Dream Team. New dynamic forms were rolled out to simplify key academic and administrative processes, improving access and efficiency for students, faculty, and staff alike. The College also welcomed a new Work Integrated Learning Manager, who will strengthen our Student Employment program and create expanded opportunities for work-based learning. 

Meanwhile, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival highlighted Ģý as a hub of cultural and regional engagement, bringing together music, folklore, food, artisans, and attractions. The event also offered the College an opportunity to share its creativity and talents with a wider audience, further reinforcing Ģý’s role as a center of learning and cultural enrichment in the region.

Our Agriculture and Environmental Science programs welcomed regional high school students for hands-on learning experiences, while the Carter Center for Student Success and Stanley Library collaborated on a Halloween-themed outreach event to connect students with end-of-semester support services. These events demonstrated Ģý’s commitment to experiential learning, community connection, and vibrant campus life. 

Ģý faculty continue to exemplify excellence in scholarship, creativity, and engagement across disciplines. 

Dr. Sara Evers, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, published two peer-reviewed journal articles in 2025: “Simulating with Care: Some Thoughts on Mitigating the Potential for Harm in Social Studies Simulations in the Annals of Social Studies Education Research for Teachers,” and “Doing Things Differently: Social Studies Preservice Teachers’ Conceptions of and Experiences with Creativity in Teaching and Learning” in The Journal of Social Studies Research. Dr. Evers also presented in a national webinar hosted by the Right Question Institute, focused on accessible and rigorous approaches to historical inquiry. Later this fall, she will present multiple papers at leading international and national conferences, including the Making Histories Project in Braunschweig, Germany, and the Annual Meeting of the National Council for the Social Studies in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Todd Fredericksen, Associate Professor of Forestry and Wildlife, co-edited “Wildlife Ecology and Conservation in Forest Habitat,” a 2025 special issue of the international scholarly journal Forests, as well as co-authoring an article with an alumnus, furthering Ģý’s reputation for leadership in scientific study and publication.

Dr. Patrick Dacey, Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing, will publish new work this fall and present a workshop and reading at the 2025 Corridors Conference. 

The College’s Music and Theatre faculty marked a milestone year by producing both the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Jack Tale Players and Faith of Our Fathers, an original play by Professors Rex Stephenson and Emily Blankenship-Tucker honoring 100 years of Schoolfield Hall. 

Also in the Arts and Humanities, Professor Brian Suttell led students to the North Carolina Folk Festival in Greensboro, expanding their engagement with living traditions. Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine continues to host coffee houses while preparing to release its fall issue, and The Iron Blade () continues to showcase student journalism and creative expression.

Athletics

October was a vibrant month for Panther Athletics as Ģý celebrated its first NCAA Division II Homecoming. The event honored several milestone teams, including the 1965 National Championship team (60th anniversary) and the 2005 USA South Championship teams in football, baseball, and softball. Alumni returned to campus to participate in events across multiple sports, reflecting the enduring pride and connection within our athletics community.

The Athletics Department also completed a draft presentation for the upcoming NCAA Provisional Year #1 visit scheduled for February 2026 and finalized the department’s fundraising menu, a vital step toward strengthening our DII foundation. 

Thanks to the remarkable support of alumni, faculty, staff, friends, parents, and fans, our Athletics “Launch-A-Thon” exceeded its goal—raising $202,319 from 2,161 unique donors to fuel our student-athletes as they continue #TheJourney in the inaugural year of NCAA Division II competition. 

These gifts will directly support team travel, training, equipment, gear, and more—ensuring that our Panthers have the resources they need to compete at a higher level and excel in their sport, their studies, and their lives.

A major highlight came when the Women’s Flag Football team captured the NCFFL Fall Classic Championship in Washington, D.C.—a remarkable achievement that included MVP recognition for Kali Jacobs.

Athletic engagement continues to flourish, with 505 student-athletes currently enrolled and a fall retention rate of 96.15%. Recruiting remains robust, with 165 campus visits recorded to date as we continue to build competitive teams for 2026 and beyond.

Business Office

The Business Office continues to demonstrate exceptional dedication and professionalism as it manages the financial operations of Ģý. In addition to keeping the College on track toward a balanced budget and ensuring careful stewardship of resources, the team is actively collaborating with external auditors to complete the annual audit. Their diligence, attention to detail, and tireless commitment to fiscal responsibility are evident in every task, and their work is deeply appreciated.

Enrollment Management 

Ģý continues to build remarkable momentum. Building on a strong fall enrollment, Ģý welcomed 415 new students at deposit and 398 at census—our largest incoming class since 2018. These numbers reflect the growing confidence families have in Ģý’s mission and the transformative education we provide—and they’re choosing to be part of this Panther family in record numbers.

Ģý’s momentum is also evident as we enter the critical recruitment season. The Ģý and Financial Aid teams have been working tirelessly—hosting families, visiting schools, and processing applications at record pace. Their dedication has kept us ahead of last year’s numbers, even as national trends show increasing competition for college-bound students. 

A Black and Gold Transfer Day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Let’s please extend a warm Panther “Welcome Home” to all our guests and help them feel the spirit of Ģý!

We are encouraged by this progress; yet, we cannot lose sight of our goal. Every encounter, on campus or in the community, remains an opportunity to help prospective students and families see Ģý as their home.

The Office of Human Resources continued its forward progress in October with a strong focus on supporting employee well-being and institutional growth. Virtual benefits meetings were held on October 14 and 28 in preparation for open enrollment (now underway). 

A new medical plan option was introduced to expand access to affordable coverage. HR has received positive feedback thus far regarding the new addition. Physical Plant employees received the information during a dedicated meeting tailored to their schedules, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to review and ask questions in person. The HR team remains available throughout the week to provide guidance and address any additional questions from employees as they navigate their benefit selections.

Student Affairs

In addition to continuing to provide resources, support and engagement opportunities to students, the month of October was full of energy as Student Affairs supported a vibrant Homecoming schedule and celebrated the opening of the new Wellness Center in Lower Roberts. 

Student leadership and involvement were evident through the Homecoming Court celebration and the Student Government-hosted dinner with the Class of 1975 alumni. Intramural flag football drew strong participation, with eight teams and roughly 200 students attending nightly.

Teladoc enrollment reached 34 students, with 15 total uses: 4 for medical and 11 for mental health support. In addition, the team launched The Red Flag Campaign in late October, to continue the promotion of Teladoc counseling services, and to partner with Tri-Area staff to coordinate spring athletic physicals.

Following an incident that displaced students from Moore Hall, the Student Affairs team responded with remarkable speed and care, ensuring that more than 30 students were safely relocated within hours. Their thoughtful coordination maintained students’ access to essential resources and minimized disruption to daily routines. The professionalism, empathy, and teamwork demonstrated by these staff reflect the heart of Ģý, and we are profoundly grateful for their dedication and commitment to student well-being.

Campus Police

Campus Police maintained their strong focus on safety and readiness in October. The department successfully completed the annual Clery Report. K9 Erika also achieved recertification in bomb detection, ensuring continued readiness for campus events.

Looking ahead, the department is updating AEDs campus-wide, awaiting final approval for a camera grant to enhance surveillance capabilities, and launching a new Safety Committee schedule that includes tabletop exercises to strengthen emergency preparedness across campus.

Physical Plant

The Physical Plant team–Facilities, Grounds and Housekeeping—demonstrated exceptional support throughout October, managing set-up and logistics for both Homecoming and the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival. Their behind-the-scenes efforts ensured that these events ran smoothly and reflected the College’s pride and professionalism. The team also submitted documentation for freeze damage claims for reimbursement and continues campus-wide clean-up and maintenance following the season’s major events.

Regrettably, as many of you are aware, Moore Hall was recently damaged when water from the sprinkler system cascaded through the building. At this time, the College’s insurance adjusters and investigators are reviewing footage and conducting a comprehensive forensic investigation. Our highest priority has been the safety and well-being of our students. 

The Physical Plant has been working diligently with outside vendors to mitigate the damage, dry the building, and prepare it so students can return safely. Realistically, with the end of the semester just around the corner, occupancy will be scheduled for the spring semester. We are very grateful for all faculty and staff who have shown compassion and grace to the students displaced and for the work of those involved in the response and mitigation teams.

Institutional Advancement

Our Institutional Advancement team has once again demonstrated exceptional dedication and heart. Over the past weeks, they have managed, led, and staffed multiple major events, often concurrently held, each designed to welcome our alumni home and strengthen the ties that bind our Panther Family. Their ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on engagement speaks volumes about their professionalism, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to Ģý.

Highlights for Institutional Advance achievements include the following:

  • Led and supported all Homecoming and anniversary celebrations, including multiple class reunions and the 50th anniversary of the Jack Tale Players.
  • Reengaged the Alumni Board of Directors with 10 new members and newly elected leadership.
  • Secured two $100K gifts and achieved $935K in giving through October—a 94% increase over last year.
  • 2,448 donors have made 2,835 gifts since July 1.
  • Unrestricted giving to the Ferrum Fund so far during the first four months has increased by 181% over the same time last year, with $99,554 given compared to $35,427 last year.
  • Leading the upcoming impact report, admissions viewbook, fundraising viewbook, and holiday card campaign.

The work of our Institutional Advancement team has been nothing short of extraordinary. They went above and beyond to ensure that every alumnus felt valued, every event reflected our mission, and every moment reinforced the spirit of “Welcome Home.” I am deeply grateful for their tireless efforts, creativity, and grace under pressure–together, we continue to move Ģý forward.

Marketing and Communications

The Marketing and Communications team continues to be the creative heartbeat of Ģý, capturing the spirit, pride, and momentum of our campus community. This fall, they managed an extraordinary scope of work, from milestone celebrations to key publications, all while balancing multiple priorities with professionalism and grace.

Their efforts brought Homecoming 2025 to life—celebrating the 100th anniversary of Schoolfield Hall, the 50th anniversary of the Jack Tale Players, and the 60th anniversary of our 1965 National Championship football team. Through videos, photography, social media, and event coverage, the team ensured that the stories and faces of Ģý were shared far and wide. Similarly, their work on the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival showcased Ģý’s proud heritage and strengthened our visibility across the region.

At the Campus Store, the team’s creative rebranding and merchandise strategy produced record-breaking sales—topping $10,000 in gross sales on Homecoming Day alone, while operating with half the usual student staffing. Their work is a testament to their innovation and resourcefulness.

The team also launched a new podcast for athletics, continued improving our website, and led major projects such as the 2025 Impact Report with support from our partner, AccessU, and the design of new admissions and fundraising viewbooks. Their 20 coordinated news releases this fall have shared the many ways Ģý is moving forward.  We hope you have enjoyed these updates and found them informative on the remarkable progress across campus.

Amid their many responsibilities, the MarComm team continues to elevate Ģý’s story with creativity, quality, and heart. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and for the light they shine on the people, programs, and traditions that make Ģý so special.

Dear Panther Family,

Welcome back from fall break! Can you believe that half the semester is already behind us? These past weeks have been filled with milestones, new beginnings, and proud moments that remind us of who we are as a College community. Each of you– faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends– has played a role in writing this new chapter of Ģý’s story.

This is a season of momentum, but also one of focus and purpose. As we celebrate our progress, we must also acknowledge the challenges that remain before us. We are still working diligently to yield next year’s class, and we need everyone’s help to retain the students we already have.  Every student counts. Every student deserves an opportunity to excel.  We must keep them here, engaged, and thriving. And, as we continue our journey toward a balanced budget, cost containment remains a daily discipline. Together, we can and will meet these challenges head-on, with the same courage and determination that have defined Ģý for over a century.

Together, we are not just meeting the moment; we are shaping it. This is Ferrum Rising.

Our faculty and staff are the heart of Ģý. The accomplishments listed here only scratch the surface of the extraordinary work you do each day– guiding, mentoring, and inspiring students in ways both seen and unseen. Because of your passion and dedication, Ģý remains a place where curiosity is nurtured, potential is unlocked, and lives are transformed. A reminder that Homecoming Weekend is right around the corner– October 10-12! Academic Affairs 

At the core of Ferrum Rising is our commitment to academic excellence. This past month, our faculty and staff have continued to shape futures, strengthen programs, and open doors of opportunity for our students.  For example:

  • The Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) Registered Nursing (RN) Program received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This prestigious recognition affirms the high standards of Ģý’s nursing education and retroactively applies to all program graduates dating back to May 3, 2023.
  • Hosted a vibrant Majors Fair with over 200 students exploring career paths.
  • Launched the Knack tutoring system, giving students new access to peer-to-peer support.
  • Faculty and staff have represented Ģý at national and state-level institutes, including the Rural Higher Education Leadership Institute and the Council of Chief Academic Officers Fall Meeting.
  • The Iron Blade moved entirely online, publishing weekly, while the Chrysalis Literary and Arts Magazine accepted submissions for its fall edition and hosted a community coffee house.
  • Looking ahead:
    • Advising Week (Oct. 6-10) will provide daily workshops to guide students into spring registration.
    • Spring registration (Oct. 13-17) will shape course offerings and staffing needs.
    • Student Success Coaches and faculty are actively working to connect students to resources and ensure retention from fall to spring.

Athletics

Our Panthers are making history in their first semester of Division II competition. Every first goal, touchdown, serve, and race has marked a milestone in Ģý’s athletic journey. Already, 2 Panthers have earned Student-Athlete of the Week honors, showcasing their excellence on the field and in the classroom. They are:

  • 9-1-25 Omarza Gray Football Special Teams Player of the Week
  • 9-16-25 Ashley Wuss Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

  • Hosted the 2025 Ģý Sports Hall of Fame on September 13. The Ģý Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 inductees are the following.

In addition to these remarkable athletic achievements, our community’s generosity has been unprecedented. The Athletics Launch-A-Thon not only met but surpassed its $150,000 goal, raising over $180,000 to support our teams and student-athletes. This extraordinary outpouring of support ensures our Panthers have the resources they need to thrive, both in competition and in their academic pursuits.

Campus Operations & Support

Our Facilities, Grounds, and Housekeeping teams keep our campus not only beautifully maintained but also safe, functional, and inviting.  They provide the foundation for all we do, while continually supporting updates to our campus infrastructure and ongoing improvements.

From freshly manicured lawns to clean, welcoming spaces and seamless day-to-day operations, their behind-the-scenes dedication makes it possible for our students, faculty, and staff to thrive. They are the quiet force behind Ferrum Rising.

Enrollment Management

Applications for Fall 2026 are already outpacing the last two years, reflecting the power of Ģý’s return to what makes us distinctive: high-touch, relationship-driven recruiting.

Compared to this time last year, we have seen a 22% increase in applications (284 vs. 234) and a 51% increase compared to two years ago (284 vs. 188). Admits are following the same trend, with 219 admits this year compared to only 7 at this time in 2025 and 154 in 2024.

This momentum is fueled by our teams–including our coaches–returning to the fundamentals: attending college fairs, visiting high schools, personally calling students and parents, and following up consistently. This personalized approach is resonating with families and reminding them why Ģý is a special place for their students.

  • The September Black & Gold Open House was a resounding success: all 18 prospective students in attendance submitted an application before leaving campus. Our next Open House will be held on Saturday, October 11, Homecoming Weekend.  It promises even more excitement and engagement.  When you see our prospective Panthers, take a minute to welcome them home please!
  • Private campus tours continue weekly, with strong ambassador participation. 
  • Plans are underway to expand ambassador roles and visibility across campus.
  • Earn to Learn applications for spring remain strong, with fewer than 100 slots still available.
  • Work is advancing to strengthen transfer and international student pathways.
  • Looking ahead, financial aid modeling is underway with the goal of enrolling 400 new Panthers in Fall 2026.

While this momentum is encouraging, our work is far from over. We need every faculty and staff member to be part of our recruitment and retention efforts–calling students, attending events, engaging families, and sharing what makes Ģý special. The College benefits from everyone’s involvement and every connection matters. Our Enrollment Management Office and its counselors will be grateful to hear from you and provide you the tools you may need to help attract students.  

Our greatest growth will come when every member of our community takes personal pride in helping us bring students home to Ģý–and keep them here.

Institutional Advancement

  • In just the first quarter of FY26, 2,246 donors have registered their votes of confidence in all that each and every one of you is doing to provide a transformative experience for our students.
  • Total giving has already surpassed $618,000 (compared to $384K the previous year)–reflecting a 61% increase in giving compared to last year.
  • Unrestricted contributions to the Ferrum Fund have increased 378% compared to this time last year, totaling $66,183 versus $13,834–a clear vote of confidence in the mission we live every day.
  • New giving platforms, Panther Club levels, and the Iron Panthers Society are providing fresh ways for alumni and friends to support Ģý.

Ultimately, every gift, every connection, every referral fuels our shared mission. Our greatest strength comes from people–those who believe in Ģý and extend that belief by introducing others to our story. Marketing & Communications

  • The team averaged one social media post per day, achieving 128% growth in engagement over last month.
  • September saw over 40 social media posts and 15 email campaigns, driving visibility for academic programs, athletics, and community events.
  • Major highlights include:
    • Promotional videos for the newly accredited Nursing Program.
    • A social campaign and videos launching the Knack peer-to-peer tutoring program.
    • Website updates for faculty, academics, Homecoming, and the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival.
    • Broad event coverage—Ģý Open House, Sports Hall of Fame, Golf Tournament, science seminars, and the Color Run.
  • The Campus Store has seen extraordinary success: sales are up 51.62% compared to last year, with “Pink Out” apparel and Nike merchandise leading the way. Game-day sales reached $7,400 at our first home football game. A 20% student/faculty/staff discount has driven stronger engagement and participation.

Information Technology

October 1 marks the beginning of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and it’s a good reminder that we all play a critical role in protecting the integrity of our systems and data.

Just a quick reminder:

  • Please stay diligent in protecting your logins and personal information.
  • Never share your passwords with anyone.
  • Be cautious with emails that ask you to click links, open attachments, or provide sensitive information.
  • Verify requests before acting – especially those involving money, account access, or student data.

Phishing and social engineering attempts are becoming more convincing every day. A moment of caution can prevent a major security breach.

Their tireless efforts form the backbone of our community, and we are incredibly grateful for all they do to support our colleagues, students, and the Ferrum family as a whole!

But we cannot rise alone. Each student we recruit, each student we retain, each dollar we steward wisely moves us one step closer to sustainability and strength.

And we rise because of you. Each member of our community contributes to the heartbeat of this College. Whether you teach in the classroom, support our students, maintain our campus, or cheer from afar—your role matters.

As we close out the first month of classes, we celebrate a season of new beginnings and historic milestones for Ģý.

This first month has been marked by welcome ceremonies, convocations, student engagement activities, and the joy of seeing smiling faces across campus. We’ve heard the laughter of our students echoing in our halls and gathering spaces, seen the dining hall filled to capacity, and witnessed classrooms buzzing with eager minds. These sights and sounds remind us daily of why we do what we do: because the heart of Ģý is our students. To all of you who made this first month so very special for everyone – THANK YOU!

Saturday, our Panthers made history as they stepped onto the field for our very first NCAA Division II football game. They did not walk out simply as Panthers; they represented #FerrumRising: a movement of pride, excellence, and excitement that is sweeping across our campus and community.

We are also making history in the classroom and across campus life. This fall, we welcomed the largest incoming class since 2018 – a remarkable group defined by both its strength and its diversity. Our newest Panthers come from coast to coast and across the globe: from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, and Florida, to name a few – to England, Uganda, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. Their presence enriches our community and underscores Ģý’s growing reach and reputation.

As we continue this momentum, our Senior Leadership Team is actively exploring bold initiatives to continue to differentiate Ģý and ensure that we remain the destination of choice as we begin our 2026 recruitment season. We ask each of you to join in this important work. Please continue to speak proudly about Ģý and, whenever possible, refer prospective students to our Ģý Team.

Should you have questions, know someone interested in visiting, or would like to visit a nearby high school to share your passion and inspire students in your discipline, please reach out to Ģý – they would be delighted to assist and appreciative of your efforts. In the meantime, I am attaching a reminder of some of Ģý’s distinctive qualities that you may find helpful to highlight in your messaging. Your engagement can make a meaningful difference in helping students see Ģý as the place to pursue their education and passions.

Recruitment is only the beginning. Retention is our calling. Our faculty play the primary and distinctive role in this mission – nurturing, challenging, and inspiring students to grow and excel academically and in their personal development. Thank you for the passion and dedication you bring to this mission. Coaches and staff, too, are critical to ensuring that our students – both this large, gifted incoming class and our outstanding returners – are supported, guided, and encouraged every step of the way. Together, we are all here to transform their lives so they can go out and transform the world.

This momentum is also reflected in our fundraising. Support for Ģý has been extraordinary, with FY2026 giving off to a powerful start. In July alone, giving was 383% higher than in July of 2024. Thus far, August is tracking 13% higher, and overall, year-to-date giving is already 56% higher than the same time last year. This generosity is a clear affirmation that others believe in and are investing in our roadmap to success.

We also continue to work closely with our external auditors to complete our yearly audit. Thanks to collaborative, campus-wide efforts, it appears that our deficit will be further reduced this year by 44% – building on last year’s 46% reduction. Step by step, we are moving toward our goal of a balanced budget, creating a foundation of strength that will allow us to continue attracting dedicated faculty, staff, and students.

Right now, we are also in the midst of our Athletic Fundraiser – a spirited opportunity to directly support our Panthers. Where possible, please consider joining in and spreading the word to help strengthen the foundation of excellence we are building in Panther athletics:

As we approach the start of a new academic year and prepare to gather in couple of weeks to celebrate a historic milestone – the inaugural NCAA Division II year for Ģý, we reflect with pride on the remarkable progress and accomplishments across campus this July. Our Panther family continues to grow stronger, and our commitment to academic excellence, financial stewardship, athletic achievement, and institutional advancement is more vibrant than ever.

Academic Affairs

The Division of Academic Affairs continues to make progress as we move through the heart of summer. July has been marked by focused execution on sustained engagement with incoming students and families. From a highly coordinated slate of orientation programs to milestone completions in policy alignment and accreditation, the division is helping to position the College for a strong launch to the 2025-26 academic year.

Orientation Programming: Multiple sessions, both in-person and online, were held to welcome new students and their families:

Strategic and Operational Milestones:
Submitted institutional responses to SACSCOC OCIS and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), demonstrating rigorous cross-unit coordination.
Advanced strategic planning efforts, including the 2024-25 Annual Report, suggested edits to the Strategic Plan, and developed objectives and performance metrics for 2025-26.

These achievements strengthen our academic foundation and ensure a quality student experience. Additional updates on ongoing projects will be shared as we move closer to the academic year. As we finalize preparations for the fall, our collective work continues to reinforce the College’s academic mission and deliver an experience that is both rigorous and responsive. With this momentum, we remain well-positioned to support our students, strengthen our programs, and lead with purpose in the year ahead.

Athletics

Our Athletics Department continues to be a powerhouse of recruitment, relationship-building, and results. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our coaches and athletics administrators, Ferrum is attracting student-athletes of remarkable caliber — individuals who not only excel on the field but also bring talent, discipline, and character into the classroom. Their high-touch, personalized approach to recruitment is transforming interest into action, yielding student-athletes who believe in our mission and are ready to lead. This momentum is evident in our growing deposit numbers, robust summer camp engagement, and continued investment in both staffing and sport-specific development.

Student-Athlete Deposits:

  • Current deposits total 253, with a projected total of 503 student-athletes for Fall 2025.
  • Increases are anticipated in Men’s Basketball and Wrestling (boosted by a new Head Wrestling Coach).

Summer Camps:
Hosted over 1,000 coaches and campers across Football, Women’s Basketball Youth Camp, Women’s Lacrosse, Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball.

Together, these efforts reflect a strategic, mission-driven approach that is clearly working. The synergy between recruitment, coaching, and support staff is positioning Panther Athletics as a powerful draw for students who bring talent, character, and academic promise. The momentum is real, and it’s building – on the field, in the classroom, and across campus. The future of Panther Athletics is bright, and it’s only just beginning.

With great excitement and deep pride, we are thrilled to share that Billy Wagner, our proud Ģý alumnus, will be formally inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown this weekendmaking history as the first Division III player ever to receive this honor. This is not only an extraordinary day for Billy and his family, but a milestone moment for Ģý. His legacy as both a Panther and a professional athlete continues to inspire generations, and we celebrate this achievement as a defining chapter in our storied athletic tradition.

Business Office

  • Throughout July, the Office of the CFO has exemplified excellent financial stewardship and operational discipline, positioning Ģý for a more stable and sustainable financial future. With a focus on closing out the fiscal year responsibly, preparing for the upcoming audit, and managing budgets with precision, our financial progress demonstrates an unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability. These efforts are not only strengthening our financial infrastructure; they are also building confidence in the College’s stewardship of its resources, both internally and among our external stakeholders.
  • Received 111% of budgeted revenue for FY24-25, exceeding last year’s 103%
  • Spent 97% of budgeted expenses, an improvement from last year’s 99%, reflecting careful expense management.
  • Staff are actively engaged in:
    • Completing physical and supply inventories
    • Reconciling accounts
    • Finalizing payments and invoices
  • A key milestone was the Audit Committee meeting on July 16, 2025, featuring a pre-audit discussion with Brown Edwards. The College projects further reducing the operating deficit by 40% over prior estimates – with the understanding that final numbers may shift as closing processes continue.
  • As we transition into a new fiscal cycle, we are proud of the improving financial foundation we have laid for continued progress. Exceeding revenue targets, containing expenses, and projecting a substantial reduction in the operating deficit speak to the discipline and care that must continue to guide our financial operations. While final outcomes are pending audit confirmation, the momentum is clear: Ģý is managing its resources wisely, reinforcing institutional integrity, and creating space for thoughtful investment in our future.

Facilities, Grounds, Housekeeping and HR

The Facilities, Grounds, and Housekeeping teams have demonstrated remarkable dedication and resilience throughout the summer months. Housekeeping has worked tirelessly to prepare and turn over our residence halls, again and again, as we welcomed a steady stream of camps and events to campus. Our grounds crew has persevered through extreme heat, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees, to maintain and enhance the beauty of our campus – earning praise from visitors and returning community members who say Ģý has never looked better.

Meanwhile, our facilities personnel have tackled every challenge thrown their way with courage and composure: managing flooding, power outages, malfunctioning air conditioning units, and manual operations to support our campers, all while navigating the complexities of FEMA paperwork and water damage assessments. Their behind-the-scenes efforts have been nothing short of heroic, keeping the College running smoothly and ensuring that all who visit feel welcomed, safe, and proud to be here.

Amidst this activity, our Human Resources team continues to onboard new personnel, despite being short-staffed themselves. They have done so with grace, professionalism, and unfailing warmth. Always welcoming, always with a smile, they serve as a vital first impression for new employees and a steady source of support for current staff.

Institutional Advancement

Ģý continues to build momentum on the path toward long-term financial stability and sustainability. Our fundraising efforts are not only aligned with the College’s strategic priorities, but are also a reflection of the growing confidence among alumni, donors, and partners in Ģý’s vision and direction. The preliminary FY2025 totals represent a powerful vote of support for our mission, fueling student scholarships, academic innovation, and the infrastructure needed to carry us into a more resilient future.

This upward trajectory is more than just numbers; it is an affirmation of the value and impact of a Ģý education. As we continue to broaden our donor base and diversify our funding streams, each gift strengthens our ability to invest in students, deepen community partnerships, and ensure the College’s continued vitality. With the continued commitment of our internal teams and external supporters, Ģý is advancing boldly and strategically toward a future defined by excellence, opportunity, and financial stability and sustainability.

Gubernatorial Candidates on Campus

A new narrative is taking root here on West 40: Ģý is becoming a destination of choice. It’s more than numbers; it’s a movement. A belief. A shared commitment to our students, to one another, and to a future defined by purpose and promise.

Working closely with Dr. Nancy Brubaker, Chris Watters, the Virginia Farm Bureau, Conference and Events, and our Police Department, Ģý welcomed Virginia Farm Bureau today (July 25) to host a statewide Expo and Camp on our campus – an outstanding opportunity to showcase Ģý as a hub of agricultural education and leadership.

A highlight of this event was the Gubernatorial Candidates Forum, featuring both major candidates in individual conversations – an extraordinary coup for Ģý that places us at the center of statewide civic discourse. This event will not only elevate the College’s visibility but also deepen community engagement and reinforce our relevance across the Commonwealth.

Looking Ahead

The Ģý and Financial Aid teams have worked with extraordinary dedication and heart throughout this recruitment season, making thousands of calls, sending personalized emails, leading campus tours in sweltering heat, and patiently guiding families through every step of the enrollment process. Their efforts have not just been transactional; they have been transformational.

Many of our incoming students are the first in their families to attend college, and the care, clarity, and compassion with which these teams have explained financial aid packages and walked students and families through award letters – often late into the night, has made all the difference. The tireless, human-centered approach of our Ģý and Financial Aid staff has not only driven record-setting deposits, but has reinforced the very values that define Ģý: access, opportunity, and unwavering support.

As a result, our admissions numbers are soaring. Thanks to the hard work and heart of so many across campus, we are welcoming what looks to be the largest incoming class in many, many years:

    • Up 145 from last year (+59%)
    • Up 88 from 2023 (+29%)
  • FTIC (First Time in College): 314

This is a moment to celebrate; it is also a reminder that our work is not yet done.

As we gather in a couple of weeks to celebrate a year marked by historic milestones, we recognize that our strength lies in the dedication of our people, the resilience of our students, and the shared vision that propels us onward. While yielding the incoming class remains a top priority, we are also preparing to meet other pressing challenges in the year ahead – challenges that many institutions like ours are facing, including resource optimization, program alignment, and the evolving expectations of students and families.

Together with the Board of Trustees, the SLT (Senior Leadership Team) has been working diligently on our strategic plan which is beginning to reveal areas of opportunity, refinement, and change to help us address these realities. Consider this a “coming attraction” – the full plan and its implications will be shared with the campus community in the months ahead. We are committed to transparency and thoughtful execution as we move forward together.

I write today with heartfelt gratitude for each of you. Thanks to your continued dedication and tireless work, Ģý continues to make meaningful strides — both in welcoming new students and in securing vital resources to sustain and strengthen our mission.

Enrollment Momentum

We continue to see promising upward trends in enrollment. While we remain mindful that the summer recruitment cycle is still underway — and the broader landscape remains volatile — the numbers we are seeing represent real and measurable progress:

These increases reflect the power of collaboration, shared vision, and your belief in Ģý’s future. Thank you to everyone who help us tell a story that resonates — and the results speak volumes.

And yet, our work is not done. In addition to shepherding new students home, we must continue to care deeply for those who already call Ģý home. Our returning students need us — and retaining them is just as critical to our long-term strength and stability. Please continue to reach out to them, to advise them and to encourage them to stay, grow, and thrive.

I wish to also express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you who worked so hard to welcome our new students and their families during Orientation. Your tireless preparation, hospitality, and care made a lasting impression and created a sense of belonging from the moment our students arrived. These early experiences matter deeply and because of your dedication, our students are beginning their Ģý journey on solid ground.

As we now prepare to welcome a second group of students and families for our upcoming Orientation on July 19, please know how deeply I appreciate your continued efforts. Thank you for the energy, thoughtfulness, and pride you bring to every detail.

Advancement Progress

On the advancement side, we are seeing strong indicators of support — with both the number of donors and the total dollars raised ahead of goal:

  • FY2025 Total Gifts (as of July 7): $2,032,474 (102% of goal)
  • Ferrum Fund Gifts: $278,871 (93% of goal)
  • Unique Donors: 930 (83.3% of goal)
  • Board of Trustees Participation: 100%

These numbers are still preliminary as we finalize June’s totals, but the direction is clear — momentum is building. From the Football Golf Tournament (which brought together over 150 alumni, friends, and sponsors) to individual outreach visits and meaningful conversations, our reach is expanding, and our story is being heard.

Looking Ahead

We are actively planning with the Farm Bureau a Gubernatorial Candidates Forum on July 25. While confirmations are pending, this event has the potential to elevate Ģý on the statewide stage — and more importantly, offer our students an opportunity to engage directly in civic life.

As we continue to build momentum, I also look forward to celebrating a special moment in our College’s history: the induction of Billy Wagner into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25. Billy’s legacy is one of excellence and commitment—values each of you bring to life every day.

The ever-changing activities in Washington DC have been covered through all media channels – many of which will have direct and indirect impact on higher education. Some of the impacts will not become evident for months to come. The SLT (Senior Leadership Team) and Trustees are actively monitoring and analyzing the activities and will communicate significant impacts as they become evident. These are truly turbulent times, and we will manage through these times together.

To each of you: thank you. Thank you for your endurance, your faith in this work, and your devotion to our students. We are gaining ground — and we are doing it together. Let’s continue pressing forward, with purpose, compassion, and a shared belief in what Ģý can become.
